A hard-bottom extender turns the back seat into a flat platform over the footwell, which suits large dogs that slide into it. A hammock is soft. A cargo liner is for dogs that ride in the SUV cargo area. None is a restraint; the AVMA says to use a harness, crate or carrier.

Hard bottom, hammock or cargo liner: which one fits your dog?

  • Hard bottom: a flat platform over the footwell. This is the pick for a large dog that slides into the footwell on the back seat. The 4Knines and Ruff Liners extenders both add door panel coverage and openings for the seat belts. The trade-off is height, covered below.
  • Hammock: soft, hung between the front and back seats. The Kurgo Rover has no hard platform. Kurgo says it blocks the dog’s access to the front seat.
  • Cargo liner: for the cargo area, not the back seat. The 4Knines liner suits a dog that rides behind folded seats in an SUV. It does nothing for a dog that rides on the back seat.

What is the best hard-bottom back seat extender for a full-size truck or SUV?

The 4Knines XL is a hard-bottom extender with reinforced panels and a non-collapsing surface. It is 60 in wide. 4Knines says the XL fits full-size trucks and large SUVs and names the Ford F-Series, GMC trucks and the Cadillac Escalade. A Regular size exists for smaller vehicles.

It has integrated door panel coverage with a one-zip opening (EZ Open) and Velcro openings for the seat-belt receptacles. The K9-Shield layer is waterproof and non-slip, with non-slip backing and anchors, though 4Knines notes that the seams and zippers are not watertight. To clean it, hose it down or wipe it, or machine wash on gentle after removing the rigid panels and side panels. The maker says not to use it with heated seats on, and that it is not chew proof. The product page lists a limited lifetime warranty. Amazon listing checked 20 October 2026.

Which hard-bottom extender states a load figure?

The Ruff Liners XL is a hard-bottom extender that bridges the footwell for a flat surface. The hard bottom has 3 removable plastic inserts, and the maker says they hold up to 400 lb. No other maker in this guide publishes a load figure. The XL is for full-size trucks and full-size SUVs; Ruff Liners lists the Chevy Suburban and Silverado 1500 Crew Cab, Ford Expedition and F-150 SuperCrew, Ram 1500 Crew Cab and Toyota Tundra CrewMax. The Standard size is for cars, mid-size SUVs and mid-size trucks.

The maker’s site does not show dimensions. Ruff Liners’ Amazon listing gives the XL as 61 in long, 24.8 in wide and 21.7 in high, but the listing does not say which of those runs across the seat. The XL has integrated door panel protection, Velcro openings for seat-belt access, corner anchor points to strap the cover in place and a non-slip material. It is waterproof, and the maker says to machine wash on gentle (low) and hang or air dry only. Ruff Liners offers 30-day returns on its own site. Its site and its Amazon listing give different figures for the extra riding space, so we do not quote either. Amazon listing checked 20 October 2026.

What is the best dog hammock for the back seat of a large SUV?

The Kurgo Rover Hammock in Extended Width is a soft hammock suspended between the front and back seats. It measures 63 in W × 56 in L; the standard Rover Hammock is 55 in W × 56 in L and is for smaller vehicles. Kurgo says the extended width fits most full-size trucks and large SUVs.

It attaches at eight points, with Kurgo Bench Beans to anchor the cover and under-seat paracord. The front headrest straps can be removed to use it as a plain seat cover. Hook-and-loop openings are there for seat belts and latch (child-seat) systems. The material is waterproof and stain resistant, and a carrying bag is included. Amazon listing checked 20 October 2026.

Which SUV cargo liner suits a dog that rides in the cargo area?

The 4Knines SUV Cargo Liner for Fold Down Seats is a cargo-area liner, so the dog rides in the cargo area and not on the back seat. The Large is 52 in × 86 in including a 22 in bumper flap; the Small is 46 × 82 in and the XL is 56 × 106 in, both including the 22 in flap. For the Large, the maker names the Tesla Model Y and X, Ford Explorer, Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota 4Runner and Lexus RX. The XL is named for the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Toyota Sequoia, Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator, so check the vehicle list before choosing a size.

The Split-Tech design is for 60/40 or 50/50 split seats and/or a center cargo pass-through. The liner has a non-quilted waterproof laminate layer (K9-Shield) with non-slip backing, though the seams and zippers are not watertight. The maker says it is not chew proof and not to leave the pet unsupervised, and lists a lifetime warranty. 4Knines’ Amazon listing gives the installation as quick-release clips. Amazon listing checked 20 October 2026.

Is a back seat extender a safe way to restrain a dog?

No. The AVMA’s guidance on pets in vehicles says pets should always be properly restrained, using an appropriate safety harness, crate or carrier. A seat cover, extender or hammock is none of those three, so it adds space and covers the car but does not restrain the dog. None of the four makers calls its product a restraint.

The AVMA says vehicle harnesses differ from walking harnesses, and to look for crash-tested harnesses that work with the vehicle’s seat belt. A crate or carrier should be big enough for the pet to stand up, turn around and lie down, placed as near the center of the vehicle as possible and secured. In a collision, the AVMA says, unrestrained pets may be crushed by deployed airbags or thrown out or through windows, and a large pet leaning across the driver can block the view of the road.

The AVMA also says never to leave a pet alone in a parked vehicle: the inside temperature can rise about 19 F in 10 minutes and 43 F in 60 minutes.

Does a hard back seat extender make the jump harder for a senior dog?

A hard extender raises the floor to seat level, so the dog no longer drops into the footwell. The cost is height. 4Knines’ own safety note says the hard bottom creates a high jump in and out of the vehicle and, depending on the dog’s size, health and agility, the dog may need help to get in and out. 4Knines does not publish the platform height.

If your senior dog needs help, plan it before you buy. A ramp is one way to avoid lifting: see the best dog ramps for large dogs. If you would rather lift, the best dog lift harnesses for senior dogs compares the options. How to get a senior dog into the car covers the rest.

How to choose in four steps

  1. Check your seat type. Bench or captain’s chairs? 4Knines does not recommend its extender with captain’s chairs, because it is not designed to bridge the gap between seats without support for the middle panel. If your bench splits 60/40, the cargo liner is made for 60/40 or 50/50 split seats; neither extender maker says how its product handles a split bench, so ask before you order.
  2. Measure the rear bench width. Compare it with the published widths: the 4Knines XL is 60 in wide and the Kurgo Extended Width hammock is 63 in W × 56 in L. Ruff Liners lists 61 in long, 24.8 in wide and 21.7 in high on its Amazon listing, but the listing does not say which of those runs across the seat. The cargo liner is sized by the cargo area instead: the Large is 52 × 86 in including a 22 in bumper flap.
  3. Decide hard floor, soft hammock or cargo area. A hard floor if your dog slides into the footwell, a hammock if you want a soft cover with no hard platform, a cargo liner only if your dog rides in the cargo area.
  4. Plan how your dog gets in and out. A hard extender raises the floor to seat level, so work out the ramp or lift before the first trip. See the senior dog section above.

How we picked

We did not test these products. We compared each maker’s published type, size, fit, cleaning instructions and cautions, and checked every Amazon listing on 20 October 2026. Where a figure comes from an Amazon listing instead of the maker’s own site, as with the Ruff Liners dimensions and the cargo liner clips, we say so. Prices are not shown because they change too often to stay accurate.

Frequently asked questions

Is a back seat extender the same as a dog restraint?

No. An extender or hammock adds space and covers the seat, but it is none of the restraint types the AVMA lists, which are a harness, crate or carrier, and none of the four makers calls its product a restraint.

What is the difference between a hard-bottom extender and a hammock?

A hard-bottom extender, like the 4Knines XL and the Ruff Liners XL, turns the back seat into a flat platform over the footwell. A hammock, like the Kurgo Rover, is soft, hangs between the front and back seats and has no hard platform.

Will a hard-bottom extender fit a vehicle with captain's chairs?

4Knines does not recommend its extender with captain's chairs, because it is not designed to bridge the gap between seats without support for the middle panel. Ruff Liners does not say how its extender works with captain's chairs, so ask the maker before you order.

What size back seat extender fits a full-size truck or large SUV?

The 4Knines XL is 60 in wide and the Ruff Liners XL is 61 in long on its Amazon listing, and both makers list their XL for full-size trucks and large SUVs. The Kurgo Extended Width hammock is 63 in wide and is listed for most full-size trucks and large SUVs.
