Best Non-Slip Stair Treads and Rugs for Senior Dogs

For a senior dog, pick by what you are covering. Peel-and-stick treads, fabric or clear, fix to each step, loose treads such as the Muddy Mat chenille treads (paid link) need no tools or adhesives per the Amazon listing, and a washable runner with a pad or a rubber-backed runner covers a hallway floor. Neither runner maker says its runner is for stairs.
The 2023 AAHA Senior Care Guidelines say to “cover slippery floors with secure rugs and mats for traction”. This guide compares three tread packs and two runners on size, attachment, backing and washing. It describes grip, attachment and size only, and it does not say that any of them stops a slip or a fall.

Treads or a runner: which one is for stairs and which is for hallways?
- Treads: one piece per step. Gorilla Grip is 28 in long and 8 in wide per piece. Muddy Mat is 30 in by 7 in per piece. Steady Paws is 24 in or 30 in by 6 in per piece. All three are sold in packs, so you buy by the step count.
- Runners: one long piece for a floor. The Tumble is a 2.5 x 10 ft runner, which is 30 in by 120 in. The Ottomanson is 2’7” x 9’10”, which is 31 in by 118 in. Ottomanson’s page lists the hallway, kitchen and bedroom as recommended rooms.
- Neither runner maker says its runner is for stairs. Neither page we read says stairs are excluded either, so the question is open and we treat both as floor runners. The Tumble is a rug with a separate pad, not a stair tread.
That is why the two runners are hallway picks here and the three tread packs are the stair picks. A runner on a hallway floor and treads on steps do different jobs, and you may want one of each.
Which stair treads peel and stick to the step? Gorilla Grip
The Gorilla Grip treads are 28 in long and 8 in wide per piece, in packs of 4, 12 or 15, and in Beige, Black, Brown or Gray. The maker describes a peel and stick underside, no tools or hardware, and reinforced edges that it says help reduce curling and lifting over time. It says the treads can be reapplied to steps after washing, and that stair treads for wooden stairs can be removed without leaving residue behind.
Care is where the two sources disagree. The maker page says machine washable up to 30 times and that the treads can be reapplied after washing, but Amazon’s care field (paid link) says Spot Clean Only. We cannot settle that from here, so follow the care label on the product you receive. The maker does not give a wash temperature or cycle.
Per the Amazon listing, the treads are 0.3 in thick, made of fabric and rubber with a TPE backing, and listed as compatible with hardwood, vinyl, tile, concrete, metal, laminate, glass and composite floors. The maker page does not give a thickness or a fibre type, and neither source names any floor it is not for. Amazon listing checked 21 October 2026.
Which stair treads need no adhesive? Muddy Mat
The Muddy Mat treads are 30 in by 7 in per piece, sold in packs of 4, 6, 8 or 12. The maker says they have “Super Grip Technology” to keep the mat in place, and its comparison graphic lists “no sticky residue”. It lists tile, cement, marble or wood as the surfaces they suit, and gives the colours as Grey, Black, Red, Chocolate Brown, Beige and Atlantic Green.
The Amazon listing (paid link) is for a 4-pack in the Aspen colour, and it names chenille and a non-slip backing, with no tools or adhesives required. Its patterns (Aspen, Diamond, Grid) are not on the maker’s colour list. The listing is sold by Muddy Mats, and its part number (sm-n-03-7x30-4s) follows the same pattern as the maker’s own SKUs for the 30 in by 7 in 4-pack (for example sm-grey-7x30-4s). The maker does not publish a thickness or the backing material, and neither does Amazon. The maker says Machine Washable/Dryer Safe; the Amazon listing says to use cold water on the Gentle/Delicates cycle and dry on low heat on that cycle. We found no warranty or returns terms. Amazon listing checked 21 October 2026.
Which stair treads are clear? Steady Paws
The Steady Paws treads come in two sizes on the maker’s shop, Senior Snouts: 24 in by 6 in or 30 in by 6 in per piece. Each pack holds 15 pre-cut strips and an installation roller. The maker lists the material as PEVA (polyethylene vinyl acetate) and describes the treads as clear, low-profile and water-resistant, with an adhesive backing. The Steady Paws product page gives the same kit of 15 treads and one rubber roller, but no piece size.
To apply them, the maker says to clean and dry the step, peel off a small section of the backing, position the tread and press it down, then use the roller or firm pressure to smooth out air bubbles. It says the treads work best on hardwood, laminate and tile stairs and are not recommended for painted surfaces, uneven steps or stairs with gaps. It also says they are designed for one-time application, and that if removed they may lose adhesion and need replacing. For care, it says to wipe them with a damp cloth or clean gently with a soft brush, to avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive scrubbing and prolonged exposure to pooled water, and that they are not machine washable.
The Amazon listing (paid link) is for the 24 in by 6 in size in a pack of 15, colour Clear, and gives the material as transparent plastic rather than PEVA. It names hardwood, tile or laminate steps and says the treads are not recommended for painted, uneven or gapped steps. Neither source publishes a thickness. The maker shop’s SKU for the 24 in by 6 in size ends in “AMZ”, and the Amazon listing sits on the Steady Paws brand store. We found no warranty terms. Amazon listing checked 21 October 2026.
Is there a washable runner with a pad for hallways? Tumble Olivia
The Tumble Olivia in Ivory/Neutral comes in a Runner (2.5x10’) size, which is 30 in by 120 in and covers 25 square feet. The rug is 100% polyester with a soft, low pile surface; the maker does not give a pile height. The maker’s spec block gives a rug thickness of 1/8 in, but that block is labelled with the 8x10 size and the maker does not list the runner thickness separately. A cushioned rug pad is included, 1/4 in thick, with an EVA foam core and TPR (thermoplastic resin) surfaces, and it tucks into corner pockets on the underside of the rug. On the 8x10 figures, rug plus pad is about 0.375 in.
For washing, the maker says to wash on a cold cycle with standard laundry detergent and dry on low heat. The Amazon listing (paid link) adds to remove the rug from the pad, use a delicate cycle, and avoid bleach, fabric softener and dryer sheets.
The maker says to sweep or vacuum under the pad every 3 months to stop moisture and particles building up, which it says can damage your floor. After a spill that may have reached the pad, it says to lift the pad and make sure it is completely dry before replacing it. The maker lists no floor types. It states 30-day returns on its page, and we found no warranty. Amazon listing checked 21 October 2026.
Is there a rubber-backed runner for hallways? Ottomanson Ottohome
The Ottomanson Ottohome runner on the maker’s page is model OTH8403-3X10 in Black, 2’7” x 9’10” (31 in by 118 in). The maker lists its key points as Non-Slip, Stain-Resistant, Absorbent and Low-Profile, and recommends the hallway, kitchen and bedroom. The maker page does not publish the material, backing or pile in text.
Those come from the Amazon listing (paid link): nylon, flat woven, low pile, 0.2 in thick and 5.9 pounds, with a rubber backing that the listing says helps keep the rug in place on tile, hardwood or laminate. The listing says it is not water resistant. For care it says hand wash only, no bleach, spot clean only, and sweep or vacuum with no beater bar or rotating brush, so it is not machine washable. It is a loose rug with a backing, not a fixed tread. The Amazon link opens on Solid Black in 2’7” x 9’10”, the same colour and size as the maker’s OTH8403-3X10 page; in that size the listing also offers Solid Brown and Solid Gray. Amazon’s warranty field says No Warranty, and we found no returns terms. Amazon listing checked 21 October 2026.
How many stair treads does a staircase need?
One tread per step, so count your steps and measure each one before you order. A 13-step staircase is used below as an example only, not as a standard. Yours may have more or fewer.
- Gorilla Grip, 15-pack: 1 pack covers 13 steps, with 2 pieces left over.
- Muddy Mat, 4-pack: 13 steps divided by 4 pieces is 3.25, so you need 4 packs. That is 16 treads, with 3 left over.
- Steady Paws, 15-pack: 1 pack covers 13 steps, with 2 pieces left over.
Then compare the piece size with your steps. Gorilla Grip pieces are 28 in by 8 in, Muddy Mat pieces are 30 in by 7 in, and Steady Paws pieces are 24 in or 30 in by 6 in, and all three makers publish those sizes (see the links above). We have not seen any of the three makers publish a stair size it is meant to fit, so measure your own step width and depth rather than assuming a match.
Treads add traction to a step; they do not change how tall it is. For the steps themselves, see the best dog stairs for large and senior dogs, and for how to help your dog on them, how to help a senior dog up and down stairs.
What do AAHA and the vet schools say about rugs and traction?
We are reporting what these sources say here, not making a claim of our own.
The 2023 AAHA Senior Care Guidelines say it in three places. Their home tips for clients caring for senior pets say: “Cover slippery floors with secure rugs and mats for traction”. The pain management section lists, among home modifications and pet accessories vets can counsel clients on, the “use of rugs or yoga mats to provide better footing”. The senior care kit list includes “yoga mats and carpet runners” among changes clients could make at home. The guidelines also say that stairs are among the hazards to identify at home for senior pets with limited vision or hearing.
The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine page Tips for Keeping Geriatric Pets Healthy, which features rehabilitation specialist Kimberly Knap, lists traction devices for slick floors among the popular items on the market, alongside ramps or slings for stairs, elevated food bowls and padded cushions for sleeping. That is a list of what owners buy, not an assessment of any product here.
AAHA’s owner booklet, Your Senior Pet From Head to Toe, lists “Trouble going up or down stairs” among the signs to call your veterinarian about. A tread or a runner changes the surface; it does not tell you why your dog is having trouble. How do you choose non-slip stair treads or a rug for a senior dog?
- Decide stairs or floor. Treads (Gorilla Grip, Muddy Mat, Steady Paws) are for steps. Runners (Tumble, Ottomanson) are for floors, and neither maker says its runner is for stairs.
- Count and measure your steps. You need one tread per step. Check the width and depth of your steps against 28 in by 8 in (Gorilla Grip), 30 in by 7 in (Muddy Mat), or 24 in or 30 in by 6 in (Steady Paws).
- Choose how it attaches. Gorilla Grip and Steady Paws peel and stick to the step, and Steady Paws says its treads are for one-time application. Muddy Mat needs no tools or adhesives per its Amazon listing. Both runners are loose.
- Check the washing instructions. Tumble and Muddy Mat are machine washable per their makers. Ottomanson and Steady Paws are not. Gorilla Grip’s sources disagree, so follow the label on the product.
- Think about your flooring. Steady Paws says its treads are not for painted, uneven or gapped steps; the other makers publish no list of floor finishes to avoid. As a suggestion, check with your flooring maker, or try a piece on a hidden spot first, before you stick or lay anything down.
- Follow the maker’s floor-care note. Tumble asks you to sweep or vacuum under the pad every 3 months. Check what the maker of any runner says about the floor beneath it.
- Check the listing. Confirm the size and pack count on the Amazon listing match what you want before you order.
How we picked
We did not test these products. We compared each maker’s published type, piece size, attachment, backing, thickness and washing instructions, and opened every Amazon listing and maker page in a browser on 21 October 2026 (the Ottomanson maker page through a live fetch, because it would not load in our browser). Where a figure comes from the Amazon listing instead of the maker’s own site, as with the Gorilla Grip thickness, backing and floor list and the Ottomanson material and backing, we say so. Steady Paws’ piece sizes are on its maker shop and Amazon, not on its steadypaws.com page. For Tumble, the Amazon model number is the maker’s SKU. For the other four we matched brand, piece size, pack and colour between the Amazon listing and the maker page; the Muddy Mat Aspen colour appears on Amazon only. Where a spec is not published, we say so. Prices are not shown because they change too often to stay accurate.

Frequently asked questions
Did Wagisk test these products?
No. We compared the specifications each maker publishes and checked every Amazon listing in a browser on 21 October 2026.
What is the difference between stair treads and a runner?
Treads are separate pieces, one per step, and the three here are Gorilla Grip and Steady Paws (both peel and stick) and Muddy Mat (no adhesive, per its Amazon listing). A runner is one long piece for a floor, and neither Tumble nor Ottomanson says its runner is for stairs.
How many stair treads do I need?
You need one per step, so count your steps first. As an example only, a 13-step staircase takes one 15-pack of Gorilla Grip or Steady Paws with 2 left over, or four 4-packs of Muddy Mat with 3 left over.
Can I machine wash these stair treads and rugs?
Tumble and Muddy Mat say machine wash, and Gorilla Grip's maker says up to 30 times, although its Amazon care field says Spot Clean Only, so follow the label on the product. Ottomanson's runner and the Steady Paws treads are not machine washable: Ottomanson's Amazon listing says hand wash or spot clean, and Steady Paws says to wipe with a damp cloth or soft brush.
What do vets say about rugs on slippery floors?
AAHA's 2023 senior care guidelines say to "cover slippery floors with secure rugs and mats for traction". The same guidelines list the use of rugs or yoga mats to provide better footing among home changes vets can discuss with owners.
