Best Dog Stairs for Large & Senior Dogs (Beds and Couches)

For a large or senior dog, the best stairs are the ones whose top step reaches close to the height of your bed or couch and whose steps are wide and deep enough for four large paws. Three of the four picks below are rated to 200 lb, so match the height first, then compare width and step depth.

Older dogs spend more of the day resting, so the bed or sofa is often where they most want to be. If your dog has started hesitating at the edge, these are the specs that matter.

Height, step count, width, floor length, weight rating and step depth are the published specs from Pet Gear and PetSafe. For the PetSafe CozyUp, the step count and stairs weight come from PetSafe's Amazon listing; PetSafe doesn't publish a step depth (shown as —). Floor length is the depth of the stairs from the front of the bottom step to the back of the top step.

What matters most when choosing dog stairs for a big dog?

Three numbers do most of the work, in this order:

  • Height of the top step. The stairs should finish close to the surface your dog is trying to reach. A 16-inch set in front of a 25-inch mattress still leaves a 9-inch jump at the top.
  • Width. A wider step gives a large dog room to place its paws side by side. The two Pet Gear Extra Wide models are 20 inches wide; the tallest pick narrows to 16.
  • Step depth. A deeper landing lets a long-bodied dog get more of its body onto each step. Pet Gear publishes these: 12.5 inches on the 2-step model, 9.5 on the 3-step, 9.75 on the 4-step.

After those, check floor length (stairs need 22–33.5 inches of floor in front of the bed here) and weight, if you’ll move the stairs between rooms.

Best for couches: Pet Gear Easy Step II Extra Wide

This has the deepest landings in the comparison: the top step is 12.5 inches deep and the second 11.75. Combined with the 20-inch width, that gives a large dog the most room per step of any pick here. Pet Gear rates it to 200 lb, and the carpet tread comes off for the washing machine.

Best for standard beds: Pet Gear Easy Step III Extra Wide

The same 20-inch width and 200 lb rating as the 2-step model, with a third step that brings the top to 23 inches. It takes 25 inches of floor in front of the bed.

Best folding option: PetSafe CozyUp Folding Pet Steps (25 in)

This is the only pick sold as folding: it folds flat to slide under a bed or couch, and at about 10 lb it is also one of the lightest. PetSafe lists fabric treads that can be replaced when worn, side rails and nonskid feet, and says the steps are made in the United States.

Best for tall beds: Pet Gear Easy Step IV

It is the only pick that reaches past 30 inches. If your mattress sits around 30 inches, the shorter sets would leave a 5–14 inch jump at the top. For a very heavy dog on a tall bed, weigh the 150 lb rating and the 16-inch width against that extra height.

How to choose dog stairs in four steps

  1. Measure the target height from the floor to the top of the mattress or seat cushion, with the bedding on.
  2. Pick the stairs whose height comes closest to that number. Subtract the stairs’ height from the bed height: whatever is left is the jump at the top.
  3. Check the floor space. Measure from the side of the bed to the nearest obstacle; these stairs need 22 to 33.5 inches.
  4. Then compare width and step depth against your dog’s size, and the stairs’ weight if you’ll carry them between rooms.

Introduce new stairs with treats on the bottom step first, one step at a time. Helping a senior dog up and down stairs covers traction, slings and how to build confidence. If your dog shows pain or a sudden reluctance to climb, talk to your vet before assuming it’s just age.

Should you get stairs or a ramp?

Stairs reach the same height in far less floor space: the 25-inch PetSafe set takes 28 inches of floor. A ramp turns the climb into one continuous walk instead of separate steps, but it needs much more length to stay gentle. Our ramp length guide shows how long a ramp has to be for a given height, and the best dog ramps for large dogs covers ramps for cars and trucks.

Also considered, and why they’re not picks

  • Pet Gear Easy Step Bed Stair. Pet Gear describes it as designed for smaller pets and rates it to 75 lb.
  • PetSafe CozyUp Steps & Ramp Combo. It no longer has a product page on PetSafe’s US site (checked 11 October 2026), so we couldn’t confirm current specs.
  • Foam pet stairs. The foam sets we checked are sold for small dogs and cats; PetMaker’s 3-step foam stairs, for example, are listed at Tractor Supply for small dogs up to 25 lb.

How we picked

We didn’t test these stairs hands-on. We collected each manufacturer’s published height, step count, width, floor length, weight rating and step depth, and opened every product page in a browser before publishing. Where a spec came from a retailer listing instead, we say so in the table note. Prices aren’t shown because they change too often to stay accurate. Full method: how we choose products.

We have applied to PetSafe’s affiliate program. One of the four picks is a PetSafe product; the other three are from Pet Gear.

This guide covers comfort and access, not veterinary advice. If your dog’s mobility changes suddenly or seems painful, see your vet.

Frequently asked questions

How tall should dog stairs be for a bed?

Measure from the floor to the top of the mattress and choose stairs whose top step is as close to that height as possible. Any height left above the top step is a jump your dog still has to make.

What dog stairs can hold a large dog?

Three of the picks here are rated by their makers to 200 lb: the Pet Gear Easy Step II and III Extra Wide and the PetSafe CozyUp Folding Pet Steps in the 25-inch size. The Pet Gear Easy Step IV, the tallest pick, is rated to 150 lb.

Are stairs or a ramp better for a senior dog?

Stairs reach the same height in less floor space, while a ramp turns the climb into one continuous walk. If your dog already hesitates on steps, a ramp is the alternative to compare, but it needs much more floor length for the same height.

Did Wagisk test these dog stairs?

No. We compared the specifications each manufacturer publishes and checked every listing in a browser; our methodology page explains how we choose products.
