He stops at the bumper. Gathers himself. Lands hard on his front legs — and you already know he'll do it again tomorrow, and the day after. The right SUV dog ramp takes the landing out of the routine. He walks up, at his own pace, and gets in.

That's the whole product. Everything below is whether it fits your vehicle and your dog.

Why most cheap ramps flex under large dogs

Here's the thing that kills a cheap ramp: flex. A 90 lb dog puts one paw mid-span on thin plastic, feels the surface bend under him, and reverses off it. Once that trust is gone it's gone — treats won't buy it back, and the ramp ends up leaning in the garage.

This one is 6063 aluminum with 2mm reinforced edges, rated to 250 lbs. That's well past what any giant breed will ever put on it — Great Danes, Mastiffs, Rottweilers all sit inside the rating with room spare. The walking surface is black textured felt, not moulded plastic, so wide paws grip across the full 17-inch width instead of skating sideways on the first step.

Solid on the first approach. That's the only thing your dog is actually judging.

Built for older dogs, and for cargo floors up to 25.45 inches

An older large dog doesn't refuse a ramp because he's stubborn. He refuses because the angle looks like work. At 71 inches, the run puts the climb at roughly 21° against a 25.45-inch cargo floor — shallow enough that he walks it at a normal pace instead of lunging.

Measure first. Ground to the surface he's climbing onto. Under 25.45 inches, you're fine: most crossovers, wagons, minivans and lower SUV cargo floors, plus RV steps, garage steps, indoor stairs and sofas. Because it stands on its own, it also works on side doors and low steps where a clip-on tailgate ramp has nothing to hook to.

Over 25.45 inches, the angle steepens past what an older dog will accept. Tall SUV cargo floors and lifted pickups sit outside it — that's what TrailRamp, our extra-long model for lifted trucks and pickups, is built for.

And it stores properly. Four-fold, no tools, about 15 seconds, at 17.6 lbs with protective padding. One person, one hand, done.

The honest trade-off

It's long. 71 inches extended eats most of a standard SUV cargo area, so on a trip with groceries, gear and a dog, the ramp folds first and loads last. That's a real irritation on a busy day, and we'd rather you knew now than after it arrives.

Shorter ramps skip that problem. They just trade it for a steeper angle — which is the exact thing that made your dog quit on the last ramp you bought.

Frequently asked questions

Will it reach my SUV's cargo floor?

Only if that floor sits 25.45 inches or less off the ground. Ten seconds with a tape measure decides this purchase.

Is this suitable for an older dog with stiff back legs?

The 71-inch run is built so he walks rather than pushes. If he has a diagnosed mobility issue, have a quick word with your vet about how much activity suits him.

Can I use it on a truck?

On a step under 25.45 inches, yes. On a lifted pickup, no — that's past this ramp's limit, and TrailRamp, our extra-long model for lifted trucks, is built for that climb.

My dog is 140 lbs. Is that fine?

Fine. Rated to 250 lbs, so there's plenty of headroom.

Will she slip on it?

The surface is textured felt bonded across the full 17-inch width, specifically for dogs that lose their nerve on smooth plastic.

How fast does it fold, and how small?

Four folds, no tools, about 15 seconds — down to roughly 21 × 19 × 7 inches, which fits most SUV cargo areas alongside other gear.
